Therapeutic Recreation (TR) is an allied health profession which focuses on improving a person's quality of life in the following five domains: physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual, with an emphasis on leisure needs through activity interventions.
Imagine! uses community based theraputic recreation in all of our School Age Services and in a select number of our Adult Services. Our TR services implement a community based approach, using the community as our classroom and teaching daily living skills and independence with real life scenarios.
The unique element to Imagine!'s TR services is that we offer an ongoing regimen of activities and adventures, six days a week/year round, which in turn provide ongoing growth and enjoyment.
Every interaction and activity is intended to teach, heal, or simply validate our participants' experiences. Language is powerful! We emphasize one's abilities, rather than instruct what they should not be doing.
Our TR services are offered in the community, promoting independence, how to access one's community resources, social skills, and self sufficiency. In addition, the community at large is educated on how to interact with individuals with developmental disabilities.
Our therapeutic team creates an individualized plan for each participant, allowing us to address daily living goals and protocols. Direct care instructors implement the plans during the activities and debriefs with therapeutic team after each shift.
Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist
Imagine!'s Therapeutic Recreation team is led by Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) who have demonstrated professional competence by acquiring a specific body of knowledge, and passing the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) exam.
Our team employs a scope of practice that is based upon theoretical constructs and applied methodology, and addresses a wide range of conditions and illnesses. Each certified recreational therapist will assess the needs of each participant and create goals specific to each individual.
Our team of CTRSs use their training and education to ensure that we offer the highest quality of service possible in a therapeutic framework.
